Punta Gorda, which means “fat point”, is a city eminently worth visiting if
you want to sample a blend of culture, simple waterfront pleasures and
small town ambience. Founded in 1885 on the banks of Charlotte Harbor
and the end of the Peace River, it is the oldest, and only, incorporated city
in Charlotte County.
The downtown offers a very unique display of its historical past with
painted murals on many of the buildings, as well as a magnificent exhibit
of 30 pieces of sculpture to entice your interest. As you stroll along the
Peace River waterfront, there are many examples of classic Southwest
Florida architecture clustered along its brick-paved streets. Close by, the
20-acre Gilchrist Park, offer plenty to do with a playground, picnic tables, charcoal grills, a fishing pier, tennis and basketball courts, and gazebos
for when relaxation is a must. Spending the day at Fishermen’s Village, a waterfront open-air arcade of boutiques and restaurants, is a favorite of
the locals and visitors alike. Of course, you can choose between a plethora
of boating and canoeing excursions, nature walks, camping, and more to
fill the day with excitement.
Whether you stop by for the day, a weekend or you decide to plant your
roots here, you will love Punta Gorda’s charm. It’s a favorite place to visit
for many and after a while, they tend to not want to leave.
